The University was established by an Act of the Spanish Parliament on 5 May 1989. From the outset it was intended to be a relatively small, innovative, public university, providing teaching of the highest quality and focused primarily on research.

UC3M Strategic Plan 2016-2022 considers digital education as an essential factor in the revolution of educational processes. In 2015 the Vice-Presidency for Strategy and Digital Education was created to promote, coordinate, develop and evaluate all the initiatives on digital education.

In 2006 UC3M launched its OpenCourseWare platform, its first step in providing Open Educational Resources (OER). The first 7 courses were published in 2007 and there are currently 253 courses, in more than 20 academic fields, receiving over 500.000 visits every year.

Digital education projects are developed by faculty in close collaboration with the Educational Technologies and Teaching Innovation Unit (UTEID). The aim of UTEID is to foster innovative methodologies based on new technologies able to enhance education and to make teaching excellence a reality.
